Aaron was 17 when he started making videos on the site with his girlfriend in Nevada, US. The site requires applicants to pose next to an ID card and then submit a photograph holding it up to their face. But the age verification system failed to distinguish between them at any stage of the process, despite the age gap. But BBC News tested the site’s « new exceptionally effective » system in April.

Most of the time these children are initially clothed and much of what we see is a quick display of genitals. It could also be that most 3–6-year-olds are not left alone long enough for the discussion and the coercion to get further along, towards full nudity and more severe sexual activity. Although there are ways in which kids are vulnerable online, there are proactive steps that parents, caregivers and other loving adults can take to increase safety. These resources offer some more guidance about online safety for children and youth. The most common places for an adult to start targeting and exploiting a minor for these purposes are chat rooms and messaging apps – this would also include gaming sites and video sharing sites as well.

Any touching of a child’s or teen’s genitals for the needs or sexual pleasure of an adult or older child is sexual abuse, and while it may not cause immediate physical harm to the child, it is abusive. Andy Burrows, the NSPCC’s head of policy for child safety online, sees its impact differently. He says the site blurs the lines between influencer culture and sexualised behaviour on social media for young people, and presents a « toxic cocktail of risks ».
- BBC News has found that creators can share content and then arrange payments through alternative providers, in violation of company guidelines.

And even if they aren’t physically abused, kids can be deeply impacted when their image is morphed to appear sexually explicit. The Justice Department says existing federal laws clearly apply to such content, and recently brought what’s believed to be the first federal case involving purely AI-generated imagery — meaning the children depicted are not real but virtual.

Jordan says Aaron had encouraged him to make videos on OnlyFans, even though he was also underage. The site says it is assisting police and has since updated its age-verification system to « further reduce the chance » of this happening again.
